What is the Treatment?
We encourage all our patients to have regular check-ups so that any early signs of tooth decay or gum disease are recognised and treated before they seriously undermine your health. The recall interval is determined by the health of your teeth and gums. As diagnosed in the first visit, you might be at mild, moderate or increased risk of dental or gum disease.
How Long is the Treatment?
Accordingly, we determine your recall visit. Usually, most people will require 6 monthly check-ups but if you are at a higher risk of dental or gum disease, you might be advised to return sooner (in 3 months). Alternatively, if you are in the very best of oral health, we will need to see you on an annual basis. The recall visit is usually 15-30 minutes. This visit will be mainly focussed on the assessment of the response of your teeth or gums to the treatment, reviewing for any necessary intervention and reinforcement of the home care instructions.
The professional application of concentrated fluoride varnish is very beneficial to reverse early decay, so that fillings may not be needed. This is done at your recall visit to certain areas which we have planned to monitor.
These are special plastic protective coatings which are applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth with deep fissures. This form a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria away and thus reducing the risk of developing decay.
Home Care Products
We have a range of home care products such as tooth mousse, fluoride toothpaste, mouth washes, interdental brushing and flossing systems. We can discuss with you and recommend a home care plan that best suits your needs.
A large number of people clench or grind their teeth. If you do so, you may not be aware of it. Most people do it subconsciously in their sleep. This habit can cause unexplained sensitivity, phantom pains, fracture and heavy wear of the teeth. We can prevent the damage caused by this habit, by constructing a custom-made night guard for your teeth.
Custom Made Sports, Mouthguards
Mouthguards provide protection for your teeth while you can enjoy playing your favourite sport safely. We can construct them for you on the same day or even better at the same appointment. We have a variety of materials (we recommend the material according to the sport you play) and you can choose the colour!
Diagnodent Laser Caries Detection Aid
Diagnodent is a tool that has been developed to assist in the detection of caries lesion. This helps to enable the detection of even the smallest of lesions, meaning that they can be treated in their early stages before allowed to become a major issue. The tool works by effectively differentiating between healthy tooth structure and teeth that are affected from caries. This works through the increase in the levels of fluorescence, which the detection aid reads and transfers to a meter. This enables us to detect decay in the very early stages so that we can protect and preserve the tooth tissue or if intervention is needed, can do this using
minimally invasive techniques.
Heal-Ozone for Gentle Caries Treatment
This is a device that delivers ozone gas in a controlled manner for use in dental procedures. This gas is lethal to micro-organisms. It penetrates through enamel and dentin affected by caries and kills 99% of the bacteria. Healing of the tooth structure takes place with natural minerals found in the saliva or they can be applied in the form of neutral reductant fluid rich in tooth hardening minerals. We may recommend a home care kit as well. It is usually indicated for the treatment of early decay, root caries and root sensitivity. It may also be used to disinfect deep caries before restoring them and to disinfect the root canal system in addition to mechanical cleaning with traditional methods.
What is the Treatment?
One of the guiding principles of our family practice is prevention. We strongly believe in diagnosing, assessing the cause and risks of disease and educating our patients so that they can retain natural teeth for life. A Dental Hygienist forms the cornerstone of preventative care because good oral hygiene is fundamental to overall oral health and functional efficiency of your mouth.
The hygienist will do a thorough gum and periodontal evaluation on each visit. Furthermore, they will also evaluate your diet and saliva to assess if they are contributing to the risk of decay or gum disease.
What we Record
- Pocket depth measurement of the space between your gums and teeth
- Evaluation of bone loss
- Determination of tooth mobility
- Measurement of gum recession and overgrowth
- Amount of inflammation present
This data is recorded in our computer charting system. We can review data that shows the changes that have occurred between the visits and improvement in periodontal health with treatment.
How we Treat this?
Depending on the findings, they will design an individually tailored preventative programme for you. This will include a thorough and deep scaling, root planing and polishing which will work to remove the plaque and calculus. They will also demonstrate the correct brushing and flossing techniques and advise you if there is a special tooth brush, tooth paste or any other oral hygiene aid which will work best for you. Comprehensive dietary advice will also be given. In addition, any other necessary information will be discussed, for example, information on how to stop smoking. Depending on your level of risk, a recall interval will be set for you.
Research shows that patients who regularly visit a hygienist suffer less dental problems in the long term.
